Frederica "Freddie" Schauss Cornett

January 19, 1935 - October 4, 2021

Mrs. Frederica “Freddie” Schauss Cornett, 86, of Sun City Center, FL, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her children and brother on Monday, October 4, 2021. She was born in Baltimore, MD on January 19, 1935, to Frederick August Schauss and Esther Edmondson Schauss and grew up in Tysons Corner, VA. She graduated from Falls Church High School in 1952 before attending nursing school at the University of Virginia Hospital and becoming an RN. There she met her husband, the surgeon Dr. Eugene Jones Cornett, married, and then moved to Tampa, where they partnered in nurturing a medical practice that Freddie managed for a long period. She was a member and one time president of the Hillsborough County Women’s Medical Auxiliary. Freddie was proud to have been part of a long line of nurses from her mother to her daughter and granddaughters. In Tampa, she raised a family of four active children and maintained an open-door welcome for all their friends. Freddie and Gene’s enduring, exemplary love lasted fifty years to Gene’s death in 2006. Freddie was graceful and stylish, independent and managerial, sociable and kind-hearted, committed to the simplicity of goodness, and she was known for her amusing observations and common-sense wisdom. Nothing made her as happy as being at the center of bustling family life, especially at her mountain lake home in Deep Creek, MD, where the generations gathered each summertime for thirty years. An avid gardener, she was a member of the Della Robbia Garden Circle in Tampa, and she enjoyed watercolor painting, which she took up in her later years. She cherished her many friends in Tampa, Sun City Center, and Oakland, MD, and kept close to those from nursing school days. Freddie is survived by her brother Charles Schauss, children Michael Cornett and wife Karen, Tom Cornett and wife Diana, Barbara Clendinning and husband Mark, and Charlie Cornett and wife Michele, twelve grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. A celebration of Freddie’s life will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 1:00 PM at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, Virginia. She will be buried next to her beloved husband at Sherwood Memorial Cemetery.
