George Pete "Doc" Scouras

January 3, 1932 - October 30, 2021

Scouras, George Pete “Doc” age 89 passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 30, 2021. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, born January 3, 1932, he was the son of the late Peter George Scouras and Irene Doukas Scouras. He was preceded in death by his sisters Rosie, Dinah. A Charlottesville native, Dr. Scouras shone as a high school football star at Lane High School and was a first-generation Eagle Scout. He attended the University of Virginia and played lacrosse on the 1952 NCAA Championship Team. George graduated from UVA Medical School in 1958.
After completing his residency at Baptist Hospital in 1960, Dr. Scouras joined Dr. Pierre Sprinkle’s family practice in Martinsville. “Doc” served as the Bulldogs’ team physician for nearly 50 years. He provided compassionate care to the athletes at MHS. The Virginia Legislature recognized his service to the Community by Declaring October 17, 2010, Dr. George Scouras Day. He was named Man of the Year by the Exchange Club. “Doc” was an active member of the MHS Booster Club and an avid sports fan. He loved the Virginia Cavaliers. Go Hoos! After retiring he continued to support the Bulldogs.
George was a devoted Christian and a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry, an Usher and enjoyed Bible Study. He loved to play the guitar and one of his favorite things was having a “picking and grinning” party with family and friends. He enjoyed dancing, tennis, golf, fishing, and hunting. Dr. Scouras was a Mason and received a Master Builder Award for his generosity to the Masons.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 65 years, Celia; His children, Irene, Connie (Andy), Pete (Ludy); his grandchildren Elizabeth (Nate), George, Katie (Shea), Andrew (Rebecca), and Alaina; great-grandchild (John Andrew); and many cousins here and in Greece.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
