Richard Carlton Hardy
Richard Carlton Hardy, 78, of Salem, Va. passed away on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, from Lewis-Gale Medical Center, in Salem.
Richard was born in Covington, Va. to Lester Odell and Mary Dorothy Hardy. He grew up with his brothers David and Mickey and sisters Shirley and Nancy. As a teen, he loved spending his time hunting and fishing. As he got older, he attended Covington High School and Phillips Business School to study Business and Accounting. This sparked his passion for numbers. He was a retired Tax Auditor from the Virginia Department of Taxation.
In his twenties he met Velma. They fell in love in a matter of days. After enjoying being married for a few years they began a family, complete with Robin & Rick. As a family they loved spending time together camping and visiting the beach. Being a kind and dependable father was of the utmost importance to Richard and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to wholeheartedly loving his family.
Family remaining to cherish Richard’s memory includes his wife of 57 years, Velma Remley Hardy; daughter, Robin Hardy-Small and husband, Peter of Palmyra, Va., his son, Rick Hardy of Salem, granddaughter, Kailyn Hardy of Roanoke, and sister, Shirley Worrell of Harrisonburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in passing by his brother’s Mickey and David Hardy and sister, Nancy Wisekal.
The funeral service will be held at John Oakey & Son Funeral Home on Friday, November 5, 2021, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery, in Clifton Forge. Please be advised that we will not process to the cemetery from the funeral home but will meet all attendees there at 2:30.
