Daniel Andrew Wirt

February 5, 1932 - December 1, 2021

Daniel A Wirt, 89, of Salem, Va., beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 1, 2021.
Dan served his country in the United States Army as a Medic, Ground Forces, 1st Calvary Division, M company. Combat – Korea, Seoul, Inchon, and Cheongju, where he received a Purple Heart. He retired from Kroger after 28 years of service, and eventually fully retired from Enterprise in 2012.
Born in Salem, VA on February 5, 1932. Dan was a man of few words. He had a wonderful quiet since of humor. He loved his family and was a competitive player at family game night with the grandkids. He had an unconditional love of wood working, he loved to travel with the love of his life.  He also loved fishing, gardening, and walking. He loved helping people in need and would help anyone who needed it.
Dan was a member of the “Rinky Dinks” of Lakeside Amusement Park. He started working there in 1943 to 1949. In an interview 50 years later for the Roanoke Times, Dan stated, we didn’t have a whole lot back then. We were neighborhood kids who showed up at dawn, picked up pop bottles, worked the game booths, the concession stands, and the bingo parlor. They were called the boys of summer.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Lamuel and Ada Wirt; brothers, Lamuel “Jack” Wirt, John C Wirt; sister, Geraldine “Shirley” Hylton; brother- in- law, James “Jimmy” Muncy, Frank Webb; son- in- law, Kenneth Conner.
Those left to share the memory of his life is his loving wife of 68 years Florence “Janet” Wirt; sisters, Marcella “Marcie” Muncy, Betty (Barry) Green, and Rose Webb; sister-in-law, Ellen Wirt; 4 devoted children; daughters; Wanda Conner, Teresa Wirt, and Sheila (Steve) Perritt; son, Brian (Kristie) Wirt; grandchildren; Jessica (Matt) Washburn, Mindy (Johnathan) Maxwell, Christina (Tyler) Tatum, Andy (Hailey) Conner, Daphne (Eric) Wagner; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Payton Maxwell,  Kadence Washburn, Mason and Reagan Conner, Luke and Mithias Wagner and Parker Tatum.
The family is especially grateful for the kindness displayed by all who helped Dan over the last few year of his illness, especially his care givers.
The family will receive friends at Lotz Salem Chapel on Monday, December 6, 2021 from 10:00   to 11:00 a.m. The memorial service will follow the visitation.
