George Richard Rumley

George Richard Rumley, 87, of Martinsville, passed away Monday, January 10, 2022, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born July 9, 1934 in Martinsville, to the late Bessie Rumley Hairston. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenny Hairston, and sister, Louise H. Jones.

George proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church. He had been a police officer in New York and Bassett for 21 years, and had also been a truck driver for R.P. Thomas Trucking Company.

He is survived by daughters, Sandra Joyce, Dianne Price (Rev. George), Samantha Moore and Tammy Tatum; sons, Tommy Tatum, Roger Sheff (Stormy), Charlie Rumley (Stacey), and Eric Johnson; sister, Charlotte L. Hairston; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

There will be a floating visitation on Thursday, January 20, 2022, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel. The funeral will be Friday, January 21, 2022, at 11:30 AM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with Bishop Michael Penn as Eulogist, and Rev. George Price presiding. Visitation will also be 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
