Reuben Ware "Doc" Bryant
Reuben Ware “Doc” Bryant, passed away on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. Born on July 15, 1934, in Amherst County, he was a son of the late E. Hawthorne and Ruth Lyon Bryant.
He is survived by his beloved wife and devoted caregiver, Nancy Winston Bryant, the love of his life for the past 39 years. He is also survived by five wonderful children, the legacy of which he was most proud. They are sons, Keith (Dana) of Atlanta, Elliot (Rosaly) of Forest, Jonathan (Andrea) of Amherst, and daughters, Deborah Cheek (Mike) of Evington, and Ruth Blanks (Dakota) of Lynchburg. The happiness they brought to his life included 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Hughes of Richmond; brother-in-law, John Burks of Texas; and a very devoted sister-in-law, Beverly Phelps of Appomattox.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth B. Burks and brothers, James, Clark, and Winfred Bryant.
“Doc” graduated from Lynchburg College in 1955 and the U. S. Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in 1957. He served aboard the USS Essex for three years. His entire professional business career of 40 years was spent with The Babcock & Wilcox Company, principally in Lynchburg with The Naval Nuclear Fuel Division. He was especially proud of his association with B&W’s role in support of The Naval Reactors Program. He was a strong advocate of this program, its mission, and its methods, and considered these years of involvement to be an extension of service to the country.
Doc’s fondest memories derived from traipsing the woods, fields, and streams of Virginia with old friends, including bird dogs. He never met a bird dog he didn’t like, although “Some, like people, were closer to their heavenly reward than others”. He loved trout, quail, and grouse, and the hallowed environment that gave them life and gave him renewal. To all who were part of this scene, he looks forward to a reunion around some celestial campfire to reminisce with an old tin cup.
He was a member of New Concord Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Session and taught Sunday School.
A memorial service will be conducted at Robinson Funeral Home at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 22, 2022, officiated by Pastor Jim Stevens. A private burial will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
