Harold Gene Hughes

October 16, 1937 - January 24, 2022

Harold Gene Hughes, 84, of Salem, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 24, 2022.

Gene was born to the late Robert Marion Hughes and Hallie Payne Huffman Hughes. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Hughes Booth, son, Robert Kevin Hughes, sisters: Ileta Huffman, Eva Saunders, Alveta (Sally) Patton, and Loretta Allison, and granddaughter Miranda Stebar.

He was born in the Sinking Creek area of Craig County, Virginia on Oct 16, 1937, where he enjoyed the country life. He was an avid hunter and loved to fish. Gene was an excellent storyteller. He loved to share tales of his childhood adventures with his beloved dog Tyge and his many escapades hunting deer and racoon.

After retiring from General Electric with 37 years of service, he enjoyed fixing mowers and tractors in his garage. His favorite place was to be at home.

Gene was a member of Community Church in Salem. He loved the lord and his family. He was a devoted father and husband, and he was dearly loved by his wife Jo.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Sandra Jonelle Hughes, daughters: Lori & husband Harless Ratcliffe, Jr. of Salem, Susan & husband Greg Ellis of Roanoke. Stepson, Jeff Walton and wife Victoria of Colorado Springs, CO. Stepdaughter, Susan & husband Ronnie Greer of Salem. Grandsons: Justin Ellis of Roanoke, Josh Pennington and wife Leigh of Christiansburg, Ryan Ellis of Salem, Sean Ellis of Roanoke, Seth Greer and Chase Greer of Salem. Granddaughters: Ashley Shaver of Benton, AR, Kayla Ellis Divers and husband Eric of Lynchburg, Abby Greer of Roanoke, and Brianna Wheeling of Elliston. Great-grandsons, Zachary Tickle, Corbin and Marshall Pennington, Kamden and Cole Conner, and great-granddaughter, Ryleigh Renee Gilmore.

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, January 29th from 12:30 to 2 pm at Community Church, 1923 East Main Street, Salem. Funeral services will begin at 2, following visitation. Tom McCracken will officiate. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
