Virginia Ann Torbett Swanson
Virginia Ann Torbett Swanson passed away on February 6, 2022 at the age of 89. Her husband of over 60 years, Gerald Roger Swanson, predeceased her on December 8, 2019 at the age of 87. Both resided in Folsom, California.
Mrs. Swanson was born in Bristol, Tennessee and was the daughter of James Guilford Torbett and Eula Ray Torbett. Two sisters, Jimmie Dee Torbett and Marilyn Torbett Humphreys predeceased her. Mrs. Swanson grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church and worked for several local companies.
Mr. Swanson was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His parents were Gladys Talmadge Swanson and Frank Leonard Swanson, Sr. A brother, Leonard, predeceased him. He served in the US Navy for four years as Photographer’s Mate.
After they married in 1959, Mrs. Swanson accompanied her husband on his sales trips for Endicott Johnson until they started a family. When Mr. Swanson took a position with Calibrated Charts, they moved to Lakewood, Ohio with their two young sons. While living in Ohio, Mrs. Swanson learned to make stained glass and built a business selling ornaments and lamps. Mr. Swanson’s work ultimately brought the family to Batavia, New York, where they were active in the First Presbyterian Church, bridge club, and many other community activities. Mr. Swanson retired as Sales Manager after 32 years of service at Calibrated Charts, while Mrs. Swanson worked at the Genesee County Office for the Aging until her retirement.
After retirement the couple moved to Baldwinsville, New York where they were active in the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Swanson was a founder and President of the Batavia chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society and sang for many years with the Batavia and Syracuse groups. He also served as President of his Condo Association for several years. Mrs. Swanson researched the genealogy of their families during their travels. They moved to Folsom, California in 2017.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law; Geoffrey R. and Mary D. Swanson of Aurora CO, and Randall R. Swanson and Valerie M. Dawson of Folsom CA; a grandson, Dennis R. Swanson of Queens NY; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth M. and Caitlin V. Swanson of Folsom CA. Additional surviving family members include Mr. Swanson’s brothers Frank and John and their families, and Mrs. Swanson’s sister Brenda and her family, along with the family of her late sister Marilyn.
A private virtual memorial service is planned. They were laid to rest at the East Hill Cemetery in Salem, VA.
