Henry "Hank" Gleixner
Henry “Hank” Gleixner, 97, (September 14, 1924-February 24, 2022) of Roanoke, Virginia passed away in his sleep while battling a short illness. He was born in Peru, Illinois of German immigrants who came through Ellis Island following the end of WWI. After high school he joined the Army during WWII. At the war’s conclusion he attended the University of Kentucky where, under the GI Bill, he earned his degree with high honors in Electrical Engineering. Following graduation, he was hired by General Electric and worked for GE in Schenectady, NY and Roanoke until his retirement in the mid 1980’s.
Hank is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Barbara Bowers Gleixner of Roanoke; son Glenn Gleixner and his wife, Lisa, of Roanoke; granddaughter Heather Brown Diderich and husband Charles of Phoenix, AZ; granddaughter Heidi Swaney and husband Jackson of Maryville, TN; granddaughter Christina Gleixner of Richmond; grandson George Gleixner of Brooklyn, NY; granddaughter Adele Gleixner of Silver Spring, MD; step daughter Debra Bowers Williams of Roanoke and her two daughters, Emily Williams of Richmond and Abigail Furry and husband Luke of Salem; step daughter Cynthia Bowers McManaway and her husband James, of Hershey, PA, and their two daughters, Anne Gershenson and husband Joseph of San Mateo, CA, and daughter Alyssa Nagel and husband Andrew of Virginia Beach; son-in-law Alex Brown of Salem; great grandsons Isaac Swaney and James Swaney of Maryville, TN; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Hank is preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Lee Gleixner (1926-1970); sister Lottie Flannery and her husband Edward; daughter Lisa Brown of Salem; grandson Joshua Brown of Salem; as well as sister-in-law Mary Miller and brothers-in-law William Davis and Thomas Davis.
Henry Gleixner was a good man with a gentle, kind, spirit. He made a positive difference in the lives of many…. there was much love in his heart. He will be sorely missed.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Hank’s life will be held Saturday, March 12, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, 3591 Windsor Road, Roanoke, Virginia where he was a member since 1962.
