Hugh Clayton Winters, 90, of Appomattox, died Sunday, April 17, 2022.  He was the loving husband of Peggy Wooten Rogers Winters.
Born in Birmingham, KY, on February 1, 1932, he was a son of the late Loura Mitchell and Wade Hampton Winters. Hugh served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War on board the U.S.S. New Jersey Battleship.  He retired as a detective from the Norfolk City Police Department after 33 years of service.  Hugh was a member of the Willis B. Fentress Masonic Lodge where he achieved the level of 33rd degree Mason.  Also, he was a member of the Norfolk Scottish Rites Bodies, the Khedive Shriners Temple, the Fraternal Order of Police #3, and the American Legion.  He was an avid golfer.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two stepchildren, David Crisell and Terry Crisell, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his two wives, Jeanette Crisell and Marjorie Stacy; three brothers and two sisters.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 21, 2022, from 6 until 8 p.m., at Robinson Funeral Home.
A private interment will take place at Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach.
