Barbara Anne McDowell

Barbara Anne McDowell, age 76, of Vernon Hill, Virginia, went to her final resting place on September 18, 2025, at Sentara in South Boston.

Ms. McDowell was born on November 8, 1948, in Danville, Virginia to the late Annie Katherine Chumley and Eugene Garland Harville.

Ms. McDowell was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist church, had a passion for riding motor cycles with her friends, never met a stranger, and absolutely loved Jesus and her family; including her grandchildren and her beloved cat.

Ms. McDowell is survived by her life partner, Chris Chappell; son, Vernon McDowell (Tennille); sisters, Kathy Dickson, Debra Lewis, and Judy Smith; grandchildren, Marcianna Kanode, Zachary McDowell, Kolton McDowell, Zack Chappell, Lauryn Chappell, Katie Chappell, and Aubree Chappell; one great-grandchild, Asher Kanode; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Edward Eugene and Randy Lee.

Funeral services for Ms. McDowell will be conducted on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 2:00 pm at Norris Funeral Services – West End Chapel with Reverend Dan Peters officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Internment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

At other times, the family will receive friends at Vernon McDowell’s residence.
