Benny Gene Shockley

March 30, 1948 - April 18, 2024

BENNY GENE SHOCKLEY, 76, of Bland, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 18, 2024. He was born March 30,1948 in Bland, VA, the son of Bruce & Virginia Shockley.

Benny attended the Wilderness Creek Church of God. He loved church and Christian music.  He was a humble, gentle soul who loved everyone and was good to everyone he met. He would provide for anyone, even if it was his last bite. 

Benny was an excellent father and a wonderful role model. He made sure his kids always had what they needed. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed taking them fishing.

He was a good carpenter. He was a rescue responder and firefighter at the tunnel for many years. 

He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

He was an avid NASCAR fan and especially liked the #48 car.

Benny was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Bruce & Mary Virginia Felts Shockley, his brothers, Edward Shockley and Billy Shockley, his sister, Doris Hounshell, a special nephew, Todd Steffey, and his father-in-law, Buford (“Butch”) French.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 36 years, Carol French Shockley; his children, Jessica Shockley, Michael Shockley, Emma Shockley, David Shockley and Andy Tweedy; his grandchildren, Michael Shockley, Jr., Gabriel Logan Shockley, Annabelle Thomas, Evie Virginia Thomas, Jeffrey Robert Scott Thomas; his brother, David Shockley; his sister & brother-in-law, Linda & Stanley Steffey; his mother-in-law, Nancy French; sisters-in-law & brother-in-law, Rhonda Robinett, Tammy Johnson and R.D. & Rhonda French; several special nieces, nephews and children he helped take care of over the years.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 21, 2024 at 3:00 P.M. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with Pastor Philip Buttery officiating. Burial will follow in Morning Star Cemetery, Bland, with military rites provided by the Bland American Legion Post #20 & Bland VFW Post #7969. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, from 2:00P.M. until service time, 3:00 P.M.

Flowers are appreciated, but the family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Benny’s honor directly to A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, 2508 Walkers Creek Valley Rd., Pearisburg, VA, 24134, to help with funeral expenses.
