Bernard Rosevelt Stone
Bernard Rosevelt Stone, 91, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2024, at his home. He was born on September 12, 1933, in Henry County, Virginia, to the late Larkin McKinley Stone and Martha Susan Stone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, David Coleman; three brothers, C.D. Stone, Herman Stone, and Ralph Stone; and his sister, Lee Morse.
Bernard honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he retired from Dupont, where he worked in the spinning room. A proud 1951 graduate of Bassett High School, Bernard was actively involved in his community. He volunteered with the Bassett Rescue Squad and was a dedicated member of the Bassett Ruritan Club. He cherished spending time with friends, especially while playing Rook. Bernard was also a passionate NASCAR fan, enjoying races both in person and through television and radio broadcasts.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Marie Hodges; two daughters, Becky Koger (Lee) and Debbie Adams (Dean); his son, Robert E. Stone (Teresa); three grandchildren, Justin Adams (Michelle), Larkin Stone (Samantha), and Charlie Koger; one great-grandson, Robert Edward Stone II; two brothers, Roy Stone (Marie) and Ken Stone (Jeanette); four sisters, Elsie Perkins, Doris Newton (Ray), Virginia Williamson (Jack), and Dorothy Freeman (Billy); and numerous other family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Freddie Bonds, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A burial will follow at the Mount Hermon Church of the Brethen Cemetery.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Nurse Jordan and Carilion Hospice Care for the compassionate care provided to Mr. Stone.
