Bernice Thomas

Bernice Thomas, 92, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 27, 2025. She was born on May 27, 1932, in Henry County, Virginia, to the late Elder Rosevelt Thomas and Ruth Estes Thomas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers: Theodore Roosevelt Thomas, Finell Thomas, T. Jack Thomas, Uthel Thomas, Eddie Lee Thomas, and Herbert H. Thomas; and three sisters: Nannie Ruth Thomas, Lettie Mae George, and Janet Thomas.

Bernice spent over twenty years in New York working as a housekeeper. Her deep love for family brought her back to Bassett, where she lovingly cared for her parents and her brother, Jack. She was a devoted and nurturing woman, and nothing brought her more joy than her son and grandson, who held a very special place in her heart.

She was a faithful member of St. Paul Holiness Church and retired after many years of dedicated service as a Machine Operator at Bassett Mirror. Bernice loved to cook and was an avid fan of tennis and golf, proudly cheering on Serena and Venus Williams and Tiger Woods.

She is survived by her son, Rickey M. Thomas; grandson, Charncey L. Thomas; brother, John David Thomas; devoted caregivers, Peggy T. Manns and Mature Martin; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will cherish her memory.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor C.J. Martin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.
