Bertha Elaine Ivey
Bertha Elaine Ivey, 73, of Bassett, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Sovah Health – Martinsville. She was born on July 1, 1951, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late James Arthur Penn and Seleda Gears Penn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Ursula Gilbert; two grandchildren, Tia Ivey and Devin Gilbert; and two great-grandchildren, Cameron Lane and Price Harris.
Bertha dedicated 23 years to Bassett Furniture before retiring from Stanley Furniture, where she worked for 15 years in the finishing department. She was a devoted caregiver to her mother until her passing, she took great pride in providing loving care for her. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life, and she treasured every moment spent playing with them. Family time held a special place in her heart.
She had a love for travel and enjoyed leisurely rides whenever she could. In her free time, she often worked on word search puzzles and was a faithful viewer of her daily Soap Operas and Westerns, never missing an episode. With a taste for glamour, Bertha took pride in her daily routine, always ensuring her hair, nails, and makeup were done, ready to embrace the day.
Bertha was also a committed member of the Way of Truth Holiness Church, where she served on the Mother’s Board and actively participated in church functions. Known for her strength and determination, she held a deep love for the Lord and openly shared her faith with all she met. In both life’s joys and challenges, she was often heard saying, “To God Be the Glory.”
She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Deacon Early Gene Ivey Sr.; her son, Deacon Early Gene Ivey Jr. (Shelley); five grandchildren, Aaron Green (Jasmine), Desiree Gilbert, Aaliyah Ivey, Early Ivey III, and Evan Ivey; and three great-grandchildren, Avery Green, Kye Ivey, and Jeremiah Harris; two brothers, Rev. Harvey Penn (Faye), Harold Penn (Dottie); two sisters Barbara Ann Penn and Norma Jean Penn-Becker; and host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at 12:00pm at the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Ray Largin, officiating. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service. A burial will be held after the service at Carver Memorial Gardens.
