Bertha Walters Funk
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Bertha Olivia Walters Funk. She went to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the age of 95. She was a cherished individual whose presence left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Our Mother was born October 5, 1929, in Franklin County, Virginia, to the late Charles F. and Alberta Olivia Moore Walters. In addition to her parents Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Ray Funk; son, Kenneth Ray Funk; sisters, Marie W. Dillon, Leatha W. Preston, and Mae W Southall; brothers Dillon Minnix, Albert and John Walters; a granddaughter, Amber Ross and a great, great grandson Erich. Bertha is survived by her daughter, Wanda Holland (Wills); daughter Teresa Cottrell (Bobby); 4 grandchildren; Kenneth R. Holland (Lorie), Michael L. Holland (Hillary), Matthew W. Holland (Heather), and Shane Cottrell; 18 great grandchildren; and 4 great, great grandchildren.
Mom was a devout Christian her entire life and we have comfort in knowing she is in heaven, no longer suffering. Anyone who came to her house was made to feel welcome and loved. Her home was a place where memories were made and cherished. Mom's example continues to inspire those closest to her. The lessons she imparted of kindness, patience, and the importance of family will endure in the hearts and actions of loved ones for generations to come.
To everyone who shared in her journey-family, friends, and community members-we express our deepest gratitude. Your love, support, and presence were the greatest treasures in her life. Let us celebrate Mom's life that can be defined by generosity, purpose, and love.
Though the pain of loss is great, so too is the privilege of remembrance. In honoring Mom's memory, may we find comfort in shared stories, in acts of kindness, and in the promise that her spirit lives on in us all.
Rest in peace Mom. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
Our family welcomes friends and family to meet with us as we say goodbye to Mom. There will be a graveside service at our family cemetery (Minnix Cemetery), Sunday, August 17, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Joe Dillon officiating.
Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
