Beverige Wayne Handy
Beverige Wayne Handy, 69, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Sovah Health – Martinsville. He was born on January 18, 1956, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Beverige Franklin Handy and Helen Fretwell Handy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, William D. “Dub” Hudson, Jr.
Wayne was of the Baptist faith and dedicated over 25 years of service to Bassett Funeral Service. He worked as a Funeral Attendant, assisted with visitations and funeral services, set up grave markers and tents, and took great pride in caring for the families he served. His compassionate nature and willingness to help others earned him the reputation of being a gentle giant—a true "teddy bear" to those who knew him.
Even after his retirement, Wayne remained an important part of the Bassett Funeral Service family. He was known for offering words of encouragement when his wife would call the funeral home staff, both day and night. During the summer, he often arrived at the funeral home with a van full of fresh fruits and vegetables to share with the staff. Wayne found joy in helping others in any way he could. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on his scooter and tractor.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Kathy Hudson Handy; his sister who he affectionately called “Sissy”, Betty Lou Wasoski (John), mother-in-law, Doris Hudson; brothers-in-law, Tommy Hudson and Michael “Mike” Hudson (Tina); sister-in-law, Connie Bray (Jimmy); nieces and nephews, Tyler Bray, Emily Bray, Zachary Hudson (Erin), and Michelle Weaver (Cole); special friends Paul T. Kennedy Jr. and Daryl B. Martin; his Bassett Funeral Service family; and friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with burial to follow at Henry Memorial Park.
