Billy Eugene Basham

On Wednesday April 3, 2024, Billy Eugene Basham of Shawsville, Va. went to his everlasting home entering into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Bill’s relationship with the Lord defined his life. For over fifty years he served as a deacon and trustee at Big Spring Baptist Church in Elliston, Va.

Bill served two years in the United States Army 44th Field Artillery Battalion. He dedicated 36 years of service at Electro-Tec Corp. in Blacksburg, Va. working as a machinist, retiring in 1995.

Bill was born in Boissevain, Va. to the late James Noah and Lottie Moses Basham. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, James Donald “Jimmy” Basham and Ward Thomas “Tommy” Basham; his sisters, Mildred Aliff Walters, Mary Lee Cline, and Geraldine Basham.

Bill was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be missed by his family whom he dearly loved. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Oleta “Pete” Basham; his daughters, Linda Fagg and son-in-law, Mason; Lisa McLaren and son-in-law, John; five grandchildren, Erin Carroll (Nathan), Derek Fagg (Kendra), Tyler Fagg (Erika), Eric McLaren (Chelsea), and Lauren McLaren; seven great grandchildren, Julia and Mason Carroll, Addison and Elliott Fagg, Elyse and Ryah Fagg, Oliver and new baby McLaren, due this fall; brother, Richard Cleon Basham; and sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Perdue (Ted) and Carolyn Helms (Tommy); and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, April 8, 2024, in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, in Salem, Va. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. with Adam Hughes officiating. Interment will follow the 2 p.m. service at the Gearheart Family Cemetery.
