Calvin Lester Cummings

Calvin Lester Cummings, Sr., age 89 of Rocky Mount passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025. He was a loving husband to his wife Barbara for 69 years, a devoted father, cherished grandfather, and treasured friend.

He was born in Galax, Virginia on August 21, 1935. Calvin moved to Rocky Mount as a teenager and spent all of his adult life living in town. He was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church and enjoyed talking to others about his faith. Calvin served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for over 50 years. In his spare time, he was an avid reader, loved horror movies, and enjoyed sweet treats. After retiring from Centel, he became an excellent woodworker to pass the time.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Louis Cummings; and son, Timothy Cummings. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Barbara; his children, Calvin, Jr. and Jeffrey (Elaine); his grandchildren, Ashley (Tyler), Kathryn (Steven) and Molly; and his great-grandchildren, Ava and Isabella.

A graveside service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at High Street Cemetery at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2025 with Pastor Trevor Clatterbuck officiating. His family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Rocky Mount Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.
