Candice Elaine Howard Bocock
Candice Elaine Howard Bocock, 69, of Liberty Hill, Texas, passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 2, 2024, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born on April 3, 1955, to Delores (Gundelach) Howard and Edgar Neal Howard in Houston, Texas, she was preceded in death by her parents.
Candice was a talented, compassionate, beautiful, intelligent, loving, and humble woman with a gift for planning ahead. Before Parkinson’s took its toll, she loved to play the piano and recorder. In high school, she competed in music and nationally in speech and debate. At the University of Virginia, where she met and married Rick, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Foreign Affairs. Altering her early goal of becoming a lawyer, she followed her husband and his engineering career, first to Pennsylvania and then to Texas, devoting herself to her new and growing family over the next decade. Then, in 1988 at the University of Texas, she realized her goal and earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence, Order of the Coif, and, after first pausing to add two girls to her family of two boys, began her career as a practicing attorney, board certified in estate planning and probate, eventually operating her own practice until her retirement in 2021.
Since putting her faith and trust in Jesus Christ in her first days at the University of Virginia, she has joyfully worked to share his love with others. This took many forms, including discipling other girls at college, evangelism at Galveston Beach, teaching children’s Sunday School, encouraging other mothers, leading a Girl Scout troop, participating in Bible studies, and just being a true friend to others. Since moving to Austin in 1982, she has been a consistent and faithful church member, first at Grace Covenant Church, and then, since 1997, at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, also finding time to join the Christian Legal Society. She saw God’s work in nature and loved the outdoors, especially hiking and backpacking in the mountains, bicycling, and enjoying the beach. She even opted on her honeymoon for backpacking in the Shenandoah rather than lounging on a Caribbean island.
Candice is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Richard (Rick) Bocock of Liberty Hill; children, Ryan Bocock and wife Dana of Austin, Philip Bocock and wife Traci of Houston, Lauren Overzet and husband Nelson of Fort Worth, and Kara Kim and husband Andrew of Plano; brother, Neal Howard and wife Peggy of Katy; and grandchildren, Kayla, Rachel and Jessica Bocock of Austin, Isaiah, Edward, Ava, Richard, Gregory, Catherine, Claire, and Joseph Bocock of Houston, Theo, Zeb and Nelle Overzet of Fort Worth, and Wayne and Tyson Kim of Plano, all in Texas.
Services will be held at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas at 11am on Friday, May 10, 2024. Interment will follow at Bear Creek Cemetery in Bertram, Texas.
