Carl Ray Nanney

Carl “Ray” Nanney, 88, of Danville, VA passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart, VA. He was born on December 31, 1935 in Cliffside, NC to the late Alga Lemmons Grainger and Clyde Nanney. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers: Sidney Grainger and Paul Granger

. He was in the United States Air Force for twenty years. After retiring, he sold insurance, was a substitute teacher in Pittsylvania County, and worked security. Prior to his declining health, Ray regularly attended church and several men’s bible study groups, and he was also very active in the Emmaus community. 

Surviving are his wife Sheila Moss Morris Nanney of the home, three daughters; Tracey Fulcher (Charles) of Danville, VA, Rachel Nanney of Danville, VA, Molly Nanney of Salisbury, NC, three sons; Raymond Jr. Nanney (Vicky) of Cheyenne, WY, Michael Nanney (Beverly) of High Point, NC, Sean Nanney of Danville, VA, brother; James Richard Grainger (Jo Ann) Opelika, AL, seven grandchildren; Lauren Nanney, Kristen Pegram (Derek), Kaitlyn McBride (Brian), Matthew Fulcher (Emily), Justin Ray Nanney (Chelsea), Isaac V. Phippin (Ashley), Matthew Phippin, six greatgrandchildren; Asher J. Nanney, Marie Nanney, Camden J. Nanney, Logan Phippin, Landon Phippin, Jordan Phippin, sister in law; Charlotte Granger, brother in law; Michael Moss (Billy), and beloved pet; Roxy Marie Nanney. 

The family would also like to especially thank Ray’s caregiver, Alberta “Mattie” Hamlett.A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at 6:00 pm at Norris Funeral Services Mount Hermon Chapel in Danville, VA with Pastor Stephen White officiating. The Danville American Legion will hold military rites at the service. The Nanney family requests privacy as they handle family affairs at this time. Condolences may be mailed to the home of Rachel Nanney at 518 Jacob Place in Danville, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to Mount Hermon Fire & Rescue, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA.
