Carl Stevenson Tomlin
Loretta Lynn sang “They don’t make ‘em like my Daddy anymore, guess they’ve thrown away
the pattern through the years! In a great big land of freedom, in a time we really need ‘em, they
don’t make ‘em like my daddy anymore”.
Carl Stevenson Tomlin was born on Dodd’s Mountain in Amherst County, VA on December 10,
1947 to Jasper and Lillie Tomlin. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior, and see his
mama, daddy, sister Eva Tomlin Mays, and father figure and family friend Richard Creasy again
on Sunday May 11, 2025, he was 77 years old. Carl was married to his only love, Cheryl Mays
Tomlin for almost 40 years. He leaves to cherish his memory four children: Carla Gay Tomlin
(Boyd Canody) and grand-pup Sweetie, Christie Gilbert (Jeremy) and grand-children Kyleigh,
Kinsleigh, and JohnHenry, Ellis Tomlin (Karen) and grandson Jeffrey, and Stefan Tomlin and
grandchildren Cailin and Shayden Tomlin. He also leaves many brothers- and sisters-in-love, and
many nieces and nephews who all loved their Uncle Carl.
Daddy was a woodcutter all his life, cutting and hauling logs to the sawmills and papermills in
his Kenworth truck. He worked at the papermill in Buena Vista where he retired some years ago.
He loved to go fish for natives, hunt for ginseng, listen to old country and bluegrass music, and
build furniture and birdhouses from hollow logs. Daddy was a faithful member of Oronoco
Church of the Brethren, where he attended until his health declined. He also was a proud U.S.
Army Veteran, having served one tour in Vietnam, and was so proud to be a member of the VFW
Post 9877 in Amherst, where he met many friends. Of all the joys in his life, his family was the
greatest, as he loved all of them so much, especially hearing his grandbabies call him Pawpaw.
