Carole Joan Delawter

Carole Joan Martin DeLawter, 84, of Roanoke, VA formerly of Latrobe, PA, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 4, 2023. She was born on May 29, 1939, to the late George William, and Anna Louise Baker Martin. Carole graduated from Latrobe High School in 1957, then moved to Roanoke in 1966. As a single mother of two girls, she got a job at General Electric where she met her soulmate, Paul Eddie. They married at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, where Carole also served as organist and was a member of the choir, on March 13, 1971. They joined Paul’s three girls and Carole’s two girls and added one of their own to become a family. Carole was an avid gardener, pianist, and organist. She loved music and taught piano lessons. Another favorite pastime was that she loved to watch birds and animals from her home. Birds were her favorite, especially the Cardinals. Carole became a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in 1986, which she attended for many years. Paul and Carole both loved to travel. In her later years, Carole worked for Jobe Florist after Paul’s death, where she met many friends. She worked until 2018 when she retired at age 79. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul Edward DeLawter; stepdaughter, Paula Irene DeLawter; and her brother, Robert William Martin.

Left to cherish her memory include her children, daughters, Pamela DeLawter Bernardo, Susan DeLawter Morgan, Deanna Carole DeLawter Womack (Michael Womack, Jr.); stepdaughters, Suzanne DeLawter Hamilton, and Elizabeth DeLawter Woodford (Danny); grandchildren, Allison Duvall (Jeremy), Shannon Rigney, Paul Bernardo, Geoffrey Bernardo (Mary), Jocelyn Bernardo (Adam), Sarah Morgan (Victor), Samuel Morgan (Lousha), Nox Aran, Steven Park, Meredith Moneymaker (Joe), Emily Hamilton, Natalie Kružliaková (Tomáš), Patrick Woodford (Libby), Alina Whitener (Adam); great-grandchildren, , Annaliese Rigney, Aria Rigney, , Eleanor Bernardo, Audrey Bernardo, Adalyn Smith, Lulah Morgan, Taylor Moneymaker, Sofia Kružliaková, Beau Woodford; sister-in-law, Janice Telford; nieces, Jill Watson and Dawn Sinclair; as well as her childhood best friend, Ann Denney Pollins Thompson.

Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at the funeral home. The interment will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2023, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke.
