Carolyn Gay Ramsey Jolly, 79, of Madisonville, died Monday, January 9, 2023. She was the loving wife of Thomas Lee Jolly for 57 years.
Born on May 15, 1943, in Lynchburg, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Emma Moore Ramsey and James Daniel Ramsey, Sr. Carolyn taught public schools for 31 and a half years in Lynchburg City Schools, Prince Edward County, and Charlotte County.
She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. Her zest for life lives on in all who knew and loved her. Carolyn spent as much time as possible outside enjoying the sights, sounds and fragrances of God’s creation. She was often known as one who defended the underdog in her classroom or anywhere, she went. Carolyn loved High Hill Farm, where she grew up and where she and Tom lived for 34 years. She loved all animals, but her favorite was a rescue dog. Carolyn and Tom had many rescue dogs over the years, that they taught how great life could be.
Carolyn was active in mission trips to Guatemala and Romania, Red Hill’s Garden Club, church, Pamplin Area Legacy Supporters functions, traveling all of Virginia to cheer on her grandchildren’s sports and events. She led others to Christ through her work with Southside Emmaus and Chrysalis. Carolyn was an avid baseball fan and a lifelong New York Yankee supporter.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brother, Jimmy Ramsey, Jr., of Keysville; three children, Thomas Scott Jolly and wife, Cathy of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Leigh Anne Jolly Mason and husband, Rodney of Brookneal and Berkley Daniel Jolly and wife, Molly of Virginia Beach. She also leaves behind, her eight grandchildren whom she loved completely; Mitchell Thomas Mason, Paxton William Jolly, Parker Blaine Mason, Emma Madeline Jolly, Bryce Daniel Mason, Sadie Margaret Jolly, Leni Kate Jolly and Berkley Brooks Jolly; one nephew, James Daniel Ramsey, III; and one niece, Katherine Electa Ramsey
She was preceded in death by one nephew, Thomas Hanmer Ramsey.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, January 15, 2023, at Memorial United Methodist Church, Appomattox, with Pastor Kenneth Armstrong and Pastor Kim Jeffreys officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
