Carter English Allman
Carter English Allman passed away March 3, 2025 surrounded by his wife and daughter.
Carter was born in 1942 in Roanoke, Virginia and spent his entire life making his home in the Roanoke Valley. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1960, Carter enlisted and was proud to serve his country as a member of The United States Marine Corps. He then began his 38 year career working as an Engineering Technician for the General Electric Company in Salem, Virginia. In 1969 Carter met his beloved wife, Elfie, through a friend and they married in 1970. They welcomed their only child, Stefanie, in 1971. Beyond his family, Carter’s greatest love was the game of golf. You could find him every Thursday, and every other spare moment he had, on a golf course. During winter months, Carter spent weekends at the Homestead Ski Area volunteering as a National Ski Patrolman for over 25 years. In his later years, Carter earned certification as a Professional Ski Instructor of America teaching beginning skiers of all ages and sharing his love of the slopes. Carter was an avid sailor and a member of the Virginia Inland Sailing Association. During the summer months he not only spent many days sailing on Smith Mountain Lake, he also sailed the Atlantic Ocean twice: once from Norfolk, Virginia to the Island of Bermuda, and once from the Azore Islands, off the coast of Portugal, to Ireland.
After becoming empty nesters, Carter and Elfie built their dream home in Botetourt County where they have enjoyed the slower pace of the Virginia countryside. Though he was raised as a Presbyterian, Carter became a member of the Catholic church, Church of The Transfiguration, where you could find him helping out at every Fish Fry. He also was a member of the American Legion and the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
In 2003 & 2007, Carter became a grandfather, perhaps his most favorite role. He loved the time he spent with his grandchildren Walker and Ella, building things, target shooting, riding lawn mowers, and eating ice cream for breakfast.
Carter was preceded in death by his father, William L. Allman, his mother, Louise Allman, his uncle, Harry S. Wood, and his aunt, Catherine Murphy.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elfie Allman, his daughter, Stefanie Allman Piner, and her husband Barry Piner, his grandson, Walker Piner, his granddaughter, Ella Piner, and his brothers, Bill Allman and wife Jennie, and Bradie Allman and wife Beverly.
A memorial mass will be held at Church of the Transfiguration in Fincastle on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at 11:00 am. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall of the church.
