Catherine Smoot Carson

Catherine Smoot Carson, 83, of Madison Heights passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

She was born on April 7, 1941, daughter of the late Ruth Shanks Smoot and the late Walter E. Smoot.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Deborah Carson Mays who passed away on February 21, 2024 and her only sibling, Lowell Clayton Smoot who passed away on August 23, 1965, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Cathy graduated from Amherst High School in 1958 and married that same year. She was a member of Elon Baptist Church in Elon, Virginia. Always interested in her family history, Cathy researched and documented her maternal ancestry in “MATOHE” – A LABOUR OF LOVE”, published in 1988. This accomplishment confirmed and acknowledged Cathy’s Native American Heritage, of which she was very

proud.

Left to cherish her memory, are her loving husband of 67 years, Herman E. Carson; two daughters, Teresa Carson Scott (Bruce) and Kelly Carson Bray (Mike); four beloved granddaughters, Tracy Mays Keene (Eddie), Amanda Katherine Jude (Paul), Jessica Combs Sommer (Andrew), and Ashley Combs Bryant; 10 special great grandchildren, Jacob, Grayson and Zayden Keene, John and Jordyn Jude, Charlie and Genevieve Sommer, and Kinzleigh, Kaiden and Kalaina Bryant. She is also survived by a son-in-law, Gregory S. Mays.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 12:50 pm on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at Whitten Monelison Chapel where a Celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 pm with Pastor Steve Tyree officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
