Charles "Hugh" Barfield
Charles “Hugh” Barfield was born on April 14,1932, to his parents, Walter Hugh and Myrtle May Barfield in Gainesville, Fla. Hugh spent his youth in Gainesville, graduating from Gainesville High and the University of Florida (BS, 1958) with a major in Foreign Trade and Transportation. He was a lifelong Florida Gator fan and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He served in the United States Army for three years, serving in the Signal Corps in Japan.
His career in sales began with employment with Prudential Insurance Company of Jacksonville Fla., then continued his career with the Insurance Company of North America in Philadelphia and New Orleans. He concluded his working years at Grand Piano and Furniture Company in Roanoke.
On D-Day, June 6, 1959, he married Mary Joann Barfield at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. To this marriage were born three sons, Gordon, Charles, and Joel.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Walter David.
He is survived by his wife, Joann; sons, Gordon (Maria), Charles (Lisa), and Joel (Stacey); and grandchildren, Robert (Katelyn), Nathan, Cameron, Patrick, Andrew, Brian, Danielle, Jacob (Lou), and Christina.
Hugh died on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Richfield Health Center in Salem. As an active member of College Lutheran Church in Salem for over 50 years, his funeral service will be held there at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 29, 2023, with Rev. David C. Drebes officiating. A reception will follow.
