Chester "Pat" Gary Counts

Chester Gary "Pat" Counts, 72, of Salem, Virginia, went to be with the Lord after a long battle with ALS on Thursday, July 11, 2024. He was born on a tranquil Monday in Salem, Virginia, on December 3, 1951, to the late Albert J. "Cooney” Counts and Grace Mills Counts. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Michael C. Counts.

Pat was a proud Army veteran and a dedicated member of the City of Salem Fire and Rescue for forty years. He courageously and honorably served the community he cared so deeply for as Fire Chief for thirteen years. His selfless service to others continued as a member, and Elder at the Salem Church of Christ for over twenty years.

He spent his free time rooting for his favorite football teams, the Tennessee Volunteers, and the Dallas Cowboys, and playing with his dog, Remy.

Pat is survived by the love of his life, Kristeen Tuckwiller Counts; and his children, Christopher Counts (Sarah), Kelli Counts Jenkins (Darren), Sara Counts Dickey (Andrew), and David Preamjaisanchat (Rachel).

Pat was a dedicated father, brother, and mentor to many. In addition, he was also a proud grandfather of ten grandchildren, Avery, Juliet, Margot, Marielle, Owen, Harper, Maiya, Ellie, Selah, and Parker; great-nephew, Jaden Tuckwiller; and multiple nieces and nephews, who all brought joy to his life until his last days.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A celebration of his life will take place on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Salem Church of Christ, located at 401 West Main Street, with Pastor Mike Flinchum officiating. A special thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice and the City of Salem Fire & EMS.
