Clarence "Chocolate" Authur Hairston

Clarence “Chocolate” Authur Hairston, Sr., 79, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away Friday, July 25, 2025, at his residence. He was born April 30, 1946, in Henry County, Virginia to the late William Oscar Slade, Sr. and Carie Belle Hairston.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Tonya Vaughn; son, Clarence Hairston, Jr.; sister, Martha Settle; brothers, Novare Slade, David Slade, and Ricky Slade.

Chocolate was known for his strong work ethic, took pride in what he did, a man who was dedicated to his work in the construction field where he worked as a certified electrician for more than twenty-five years. He was of the Christian faith and found purpose in serving others by his volunteer work at Samaritan Inn; a place that was truly his heart. He spent his time worshiping with and loving those at Samaritan’s Inn. Chocolate was a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Turner; sons, Thaddus Hairston, Eric Hairston, and Lloyd Hairston; sisters, Gilda Doggett, Patricia Stokes (Cecil), Barbara Slade, and Oria Slade; brothers, William Slade (Rose), Henry Slade (Connie), Sandy Slade, Albert Slade (Velma); ten grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Christopher Hairston officiating. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and extended family daily from 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM, at 116 Melody Court, Martinsville, Virginia 24112.
