" Coach Coty" Dickerson of Appomattox, Virginia
October 21, 1944 - January 3, 2024

"Coach" Roscoe Darnell "Coty" Dickerson Jr. was found peacefully in forever sleep at his home on January 3, 2024.

Born on October 21, 1944, in Christiansburg, VA, he was the son of the late Roscoe Darnell "Coty" Dickerson Sr. and Dorris Correll Dickerson. He was and preceded in death by his brother, Roger Dickerson and sister, Rebecca "Becky" Dickerson Bellows.

He is survived by his brother, Samuel "Sammy" Dickerson; the mother of his children, Carol Dickerson as well as his three children, Christopher Dickerson and wife, Denise, Timothy Dickerson and wife, Sonya, and Joseph Dickerson and wife, Jennifer. He is survived also by his grandchildren Joey Dickerson II, Josh Dickerson, Jenna Dickerson, Laura Dickerson, Anna Whidden, Micheal Herndon, Alex Dickerson, C.J. Dickerson, Brandon Barber, and Colton Angel; and nine great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews-- all of which he loved.

Coty grew up in Christiansburg, VA and spent most of his time on a baseball field or on the basketball court. He knew very young in life that he wanted to be a coach and a teacher. He went on to pursue his dreams spending two years at Lee's McCrae College in N.C., where he was a 4-sport letterman in basketball, baseball, track, and cross country. After obtaining his Associate Degree, he went back home to Blacksburg, VA where he spent four years at Virginia Tech and received a Bachelor's Degree. Coty was able to live out his dream with his first job at Shawsville High School in Virginia, where in 1972-1973 he received the coach of the year award in basketball. Shortly after, Coty accepted a teaching job in Appomattox County earning Seminole District coach of the year in baseball.

In addition to these accomplishments, he coached stellar Appomattox basketball teams during the 1980s and he was an assistant coach on the Appomattox Seminole district football championship team of 1982. He was awarded cross country coach of the year in the Seminole District in 1991 and 1992.

After 30 years as a teacher and coach, Coty received the ultimate compliment in 2019, when he was inducted into the Appomattox Sports Hall of Fame. Appomattox loved you too Dad. It was clear that God had gifted our father with some major gifts; Heart, determination, and a never give up attitude.

Coty truly loved Appomattox and the surrounding communities. He spent over 50 years officiating basketball and baseball. He officiated every level from recreational league to college. He enjoyed his time with the young people of our community. He encapsulated being a big kid at heart. The only thing I can say he loved more than sports and his community was his family-- especially his children and grandchildren.

It is with a heavy heart that our father has gone home to be with the Lord.

I'm sure he's on a baseball field in heaven calling strikes, balls, and outs.

Love you, Dad.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, January 8, 2024, at Concord Cemetery with Pastor Rayford Fleshman and Pastor Rick Caldwell officiating.
