David Alan Kerr
David Alan Kerr, a beloved father, companion, brother, and friend, passed away on June 1, 2025, at the age of 70, in Pearisburg, Virginia, where he was born on May 6, 1955. His life was marked by kindness, dedication, and a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys.
David was a son of Appalachia, raised with a reverence for the mountains of Giles County he called home throughout his life. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman. He enjoyed camping, hunting, searching for morel mushrooms, and fishing, especially for trout. David loved scouting the stocking schedules and would often be seen on the banks of a freshly stocked stream.
David was an avid Virginia Tech football fan and enjoyed tailgating and attending games with his son and close friends. David was known for his unwavering work ethic and friendly nature, never meeting a stranger. He served the community for many years at Kroger and Walmart before ultimately retiring from Food Lion. He later brought his warmth and good humor to many faces while working at the Virginia ABC Store.
Family was the heart of David’s life. He was a loving and devoted father to his son, Davy Kerr (David Jr.), who brought him immense pride and joy. He shared a close and enduring bond with his companion, Dorthea Meredith. His sister, Kathy Carter, shared in the laughter and memories that only siblings can appreciate. David’s step-brother, Gordy Hazelwood, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins, will fondly remember his jovial spirit and the warmth he brought to family gatherings.
David was greeted in passing by his parents, Billy Junior Kerr and Betty Sue Dye Kerr, who instilled in him the values of family and hard work. His brothers, Steve Kerr and Michael Hazelwood, as well as his brother-in-law, Barry Carter, and step-sister, Marsha Barnett, predeceased him, leaving a legacy of cherished memories.
Those who knew David understood his love for his grandmother and how it shaped the man he became—compassionate, selfless, and always ready to lend a helping hand. His stories, often filled with humor and wisdom, will be retold and cherished by those who were fortunate enough to hear them.
