David Christopher Fulcher
David Christopher Fulcher, 52, of Martinsville, Virginia, completed his life’s journey on December 4, 2025, peacefully in the presence of family. As his earthly journey ended, a new one began in the afterlife surrounded by loved ones—family, friends, and pets.
Born on May 21, 1973, in Martinsville to James Lawrence Fulcher and Ann Russelline Stewart Fulcher, David was a beautiful, caring, kind-hearted soul from childhood through adulthood. Those who knew him could not help but love him; he marched to the beat of his own drum and lived every day to the fullest. He graduated from Martinsville High School in 1991, where he was a proud football player and a member of the 1988 championship team, and later attended college at East McCray College in Boone, North Carolina in the mid‑1990s.
David worked several jobs over the years and made friends wherever he went. One of his favorite roles was at the fish farm in Ridgeway, Virginia and another place of employment took him to the frozen plains of North Dakota. He especially loved his work in the meat department at Harris Teeter in New Bern, North Carolina, a job he took great pride in. His very first job was working with his father at MegaFlea in Ridgeway, Virginia and places all over Virginia and North Carolina.
He loved people in general and lived by the mottos “Be kind, live, laugh, and love.” His favorite things were music and festivals; he especially cherished concerts and following the Grateful Dead around the West Coast in the mid‑1990s, living in a van for months and collecting memories with friends. Family, friends, music, movies, and good food brought him joy, and many of his friends became family in his heart. A simple man in many ways, David appreciated life’s small moments and wanted those around him to smile and feel grateful.
David is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his brother, Darrell R. Fulcher (Charlotte) of Bassett; his sister, Lawra Ann Custer (Robbie) of Bassett; niece, Heather Dawn Lawrence Fulcher of Fieldale; nephew, Beau Giles Custer (Hannah) of Bassett; and nephew, Dr. Buzz James Custer of Ridgeway, Virginia. He is also survived by his uncle, Dr. Hugh H. Morgan of Athens, Georgia; many cousins from both sides of the family; and a special adopted family, Cheyenne and Katy Surber of Martinsville, as well as dear friend, Judd Parker of Minot, North Dakota.
A celebration memorial will be held Monday, December 15, 2025 from 6-8 PM. The family extends heartfelt appreciation to everyone for their love, support, and kindness during this time. In keeping with David’s wishes, this will not be a traditional funeral; instead, it will be a celebration of life where people can smile, be thankful, and be happy as they remember him.
