Diane Rush Hindenlang

August 29, 1950 - July 30, 2024

Diane Rush Hindenlang, 73, of Roanoke, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in the company of loved ones. Born on August 29, 1950, to Walstrum and Evelyn (nee Dillard) Rush in Lynchburg, Virginia, Diane or “Little Bit” was the third of five children raised on Riverside Drive. Growing up, Diane was a Junior Miss participant, an avid animal lover—including her pet capuchin monkey, and graduate of E.C. Glass High School. Reinhard Hindenlang, born in Leutkirch, Germany, met and quickly fell for Diane during their last year of high school. They were married on December 7, 1968, and together had four children: Linda Austin, Robert Hindenlang, Reinhard Hindenlang, and Leigh Anne (Annie) Hindenlang. Though she spent most of her adult life in Roanoke, Virginia, Diane spent the last decade in Pamplin, Virginia, where she participated in the local arts community, birded with her sister Mary, and enjoyed evenings on the porch with her lovingly-spoiled dachshund, Lucy.

Diane’s artistry and creativity permeated every part of her life: gifts for loved ones, children’s school assignments, art shows, celebrations at church, weddings, Halloween costumes, and anywhere she sat still long enough. She generously donated her gifts to make each of these moments unique and to express her own joy as a participant. She loved road trips with her family. No journey was too long if a historical marker, lighthouse, mountain view or red barn awaited her at the end. Diane never met a stranger and always joked she could strike up a conversation with a fence post. Those who had the pleasure of knowing her will remember her easy laugh, quit wit, and pride in her family. A devout Christian her entire life, her family is comforted knowing she’s dancing and singing on the streets of heaven.

She is survived by her husband, her sisters Jacqueline Huger and Mary Elder, brother John Rush, four children, six grandchildren Ashleigh Russell, Tyler Austin, Emily Hindenlang, Will Austin, Gabriel Hindenlang, and Angus Hindenlang, one great-grandson Evan Rusell, numerous nieces and nephews, and grand dogs.

In honor of her final wishes, Diane’s remains will be spread in her beloved Blue Ridge Mountains with her immediate family. The family will be hosting a celebration of her life on September 27, 2024, in Roanoke, Virginia for all who are able and wish to attend to remember Diane. For more information or to RSVP for the gathering, please contact her daughter, Annie Hindenlang, at lahindenlang@gmail.com or (540) 491-0711.
