Dolores Evans

Dolores Evans, 87, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family, on April 27, 2025 in Danville, Virginia. Dolores was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 7, 1938 to the late Nancy Bell-Easley and the late George Peterson. She was also predeceased by her loving husband of many years, Mr. Robert “Sonny” Evans Sr., and her son, Gerard Evans Sr.

Dolores was of the Christian Faith. As an only child, she had humble beginnings and often spent time with family and cousins visiting in Halifax, Virginia. Moving from Baltimore, Maryland, with her mother to Brooklyn, New York. In 1957, she married her late husband, Sonny, and together they raised the irrefutable Evans 7 in the housing projects on Jersey Street on Staten Island, New York. Later, they’d purchase a big house on Van Duzer Street and build it into a loving home, adding many more children to their family through foster care and eventually adoption. Before retirement, Dolores worked for many years as a Teacher’s Assistant for Staten Island Head Start and Richmond University Mental Health Program.

Dolores was also known as an amazing Cook. She baked cakes and pies and whipped up gravies and biscuits all from scratch. She churned butter and made mouthwatering meals resembling the table spread out like Sunday Dinner at Big Mama’s House in the Movie “Soul Food.” But Better! If you were ever hungry, Ms Dee would fix you a plate!

Dolores is survived by her SIX biological children: Robert Evans, Alethea Hutchinson-Evans, Vanessa Evans, Cheryl Evans Glover, Andre Evans, and Clayton Evans, AND SEVEN Adopted children - Kelly Evans, Dwight Evans, Ebony Showers, Samuel Hunter-Evans , Angelique Hunter- Evans, Michael Hunter-Evans, and Rishard Evans

She was affectionately known as Nana to her THIRTY-TWO Grandchildren: Akima, Melaka, Gerard Jr., Taneia, Yasmene, Timiya, Tiron, Tywuan, TecQuan, Jerell, Tavonna, Sahida, Germaine, Carl, Sade, Takeshi, Namiko, Scarlet, Geiliana, Gabriella, Alan, Ruby, Josiah, Chanel, Cheyenne, Ilan, Morocco, Sameera, JoyMarie, M”kya, Ani’yah and A’narih.

And the Blessing of TWELVE Great-Grandchildren including Zaire Davyd, Zsadai, Zailanea, Phoenix, Naje`, Shaylin, Maraya, Elias, Kobi, Nadiyan, Tellani and Ma’Jesti.

Nana Loved Children can you tell? She was also a Certified Foster Parent and mentored many youth that she lovingly took into her home. She was a Mother to many.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Dolores on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 11:00 am at Norris Mt. Hermon Chapel, Danville, VA with Pastor Willis J Ferrell PhD presiding.

Interment will follow at Royal Medley Cemetery, 7107 Chatham Road, Nathalie, VA 24577.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Mrs. Evans.
