Donald Stafford Jones

May 17, 1949 - February 5, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald S. Jones on February 3, 2025, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Donald's life was a testament to love, dedication, and service. His memory will forever be etched into the hearts of those who knew him.

Donald graduated from William Fleming High School '67 and Virginia Tech, Class of '71, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His career at Roanoke Gas Company was more than just a job; it was a place where he formed lasting friendships and found immense satisfaction for over 38 years. Even after retirement, his passion for serving others and his commitment to work took him to Simpson Funeral Home. Here he was able to share his love of Christ with those in their time of need. He served his country with honor in the United States National Guard. His love of sports and working with youth was evident as he was an official for youth recreation teams and VHSL football for many years, further demonstrating his commitment to service and community.

He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 38 years, Dayle Jones, with whom he shared many beautiful years. As a father, he was a guiding light to his daughter, Katrenna Sandy, and her husband, Steven Sandy. His grandchildren, Ryan Sandy (Brittany), Katelyn Alexander (Benjamin), and Phillip Sandy (Lindsey), were the pride and joy of his life. He adored his six great-grandchildren, who brought endless smiles and laughter to his days. He loved his wife's siblings Dr. Clyde (CR) and Betty Jo Conner, Alan and Barbara Powers, MC (Jean) Poff as if they were his own.

Donald was preceded in death by his father, Cleo (Casey) Jones; his mother, Frances Creasy Jones; his sister, Brenda Saunders; sister-in-law Kathryn Conner (who passed on the same day); and four angel great grandchildren. Despite these losses, he remained a source of strength and comfort for his family, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand.

A man of deep faith, Donald was an active member of Green Ridge Baptist Church. He found great joy in teaching the Adult Sunday School class, singing in the choir and serving as a deacon. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in all his endeavors.

Donald's legacy is one of love, faith, and unwavering dedication. He will be remembered for his warm smile, his gentle spirit, and his boundless love for his family and friends. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the love he gave so freely.

Rest in peace, Donald. You will be deeply missed and forever loved. We know you were welcomed home with, "Well done, thy good and faithful servant".

A visitation for friends and family will be held at Simpson Funeral Home and Crematory on February 19,2025 from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm, immediately followed by a service at 1:00 pm to remember his life. Officiated by Rev. Greg Moser, Rev. Michael Palmer, Dr. C.R. Conner and Reverend Walter Lee Woods.

In lieu of flowers please help continue Donald's legacy of caring for others and make donations to Straight Street as they help area students and families in our community. You can donate online at www.straightstreet.org. This will be a joint service that includes Dayle’s sister, Katheryn Conner Gibson, who passed away the same day as Don.
