Doris Powell Handy

Doris J. Handy, 80, of Salem, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025. Born August 29, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Charles B. Powell and Marie Powell Woodlink. She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Handy and is survived by her sister Joyce Boone and Charles Powell (Tina).

Doris was the loving mother of Anthony Handy (Holly) and Scott Handy (Jessica), and the proud grandmother of Kristin Sapperstein (Paul), Lauren Handy, Stratton Handy, Hudson Handy, Nathanial Rucker, and Kayleigh David. She was also blessed with two great-grandchildren Monroe and Ellett Sapperstein, who brought her immense joy. Doris cherished her many nieces and nephews and held a special lifelong bond with her childhood friend, Esther Jones.

A lifelong resident of the Roanoke Valley, Doris dedicated her career to serving others through her work with the Roanoke City Department of Social Services, where she retired after many years of faithful service. Her compassion, kindness, and devotion to family and friends touched countless lives.

In keeping with her wishes the family will gather for a private burial.
