- January 27, 2025

After a brief illness our beloved mother, Dorothy Arpert Skaar, died on January 27, 2025 while being cared for at The Kroontje Health Care Center in Blacksburg, Virginia. She was 100 years old. She was born August 11, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York to Dorothy (Poole)and Eric Arpert. Dorothy attended Syracuse University where she met Christen Skaar whom she married on February 5th, 1944. Christen served abroad during WWII and, after the war, he took a position at Syracuse University. They raised their two sons, Eric and Steven, and two daughters, Dorothy (Dee) and Janet in Syracuse. Chris’s work also took the family to both Venezuela and Taiwan for some time. She was always an active member of her church, serving as Pal Gal in the Pioneer Girls organization. She lived in Syracuse until 1976, after which Dorothy and Christen moved to Blacksburg VA. She spent most summers in Ocean Grove, NJ, where many special memories were made. She was a graceful and loving woman throughout her long life, living with an attitude of gratitude and a passionate love of dogs. Dorothy is survived by her four children: Eric Skaar, Steven Skaar (Emily), Dorothy Frith (Eric), Janet Sember (Bob); her beloved sister, Janet Davison; grandchildren, Alice Dorothy Skaar, Christian Skaar, Timothy Skaar (Denell), Kristen Martin (Calvin), Stephanie Regrut (Jon), Alexandra Kreager, Benjamin Kreager, Christopher Frith, Jordan Frith, and Tyler Frith; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Christen Skaar, her brother, Eric Sheridan Arpert, daughter-in-law, Alice Roden Skaar, brother-in-law Dexter Davison, and two infant children. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff at Kroontje for their thoughtful care of our mother. She will be missed by us all. All that love could do was done. Her funeral service will be held on what would be Chris and Dorothy’s 81st wedding anniversary, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2:30 PM at Blacksburg Christian Fellowship, 2300 N. Main Street in Blacksburg.
