Dorothy Mae Turner Hamby
Dorothy Mae Turner Hamby, 92, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 19, 2025. She was born on May 25, 1933, to the late Albert Turner and Olga Thelma Shelton Turner.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 72 years, Robert Lawrence Hamby; her daughter, Terry Hamby-Kendrick; and her sister, Bernice Turner Skiles.
Dot was a member of Daystar Ministries. She was a graduate of J.D. Bassett High School, where she played varsity basketball and softball and was active in many clubs. It was while playing basketball that she met the love of her life, Robert. He was in the area working as an ironworker at Philpott Dam, attended one of her basketball games, and the rest was history.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lisa Mae Hamby Mathis, and son-in-law, Johnny Mathis II; three grandchildren, Britney Henson, Robert “Robbie” Whitlow (Tori), and Brandon Kendrick (Liz); four great-grandchildren, Zane and Aubrey Whitlow, Peyton and Parker Henson, and Kaden Pruett; one sister, Maggie Turner Moran; and a host of other family members and friends.
When asking people about Dot, the first word from anyone is always “giving.” She was one of the kindest, most caring, and selfless women you could ever know. She loved the Lord and enjoyed talking about Him. She was the absolute best mom and Mamaw to her daughter and grandkids. They have such fond memories of all the camping trips and overnight stays with her and their Papaw. Her passions included cooking, baking, and raising a huge garden every year — and she was exceptionally good at it. But her most treasured passion was her family.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Sam Caldwell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Henry Memorial Park.
In one sense there is no death. The life of a soul on earth last beyond her departure. You will always feel that life touching yours, that voice speaking to you, that spirit looking out of other eye, talking to you in the familiar things she touched, worked with, loved as familiar friends. She lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew her.
