Douglas Lee Gordon

DOUGLAS LEE GORDON, 85, of Mechanicsburg, VA (Bland County), passed away on January 2, 2025, while holding the hand of his wife Irene Hounshell Gordon with sons surrounding. He was born on April 12, 1939, at the family home in which he lived all of his life. 

Doug married Irene, the love of his life for 67 years, on September 4, 1957, eloping to York, SC, driving his prized 57 Chevy. Also surviving are their sons Douglas Lee Gordon II and Robert Thomas Gordon and numerous nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by parents Fred Thomas Gordon and Goldie Hamilton Gordon, and brother Donald F. Gordon. 

Doug was the 2nd generation owner of the 3-generation business, Gordon’s Store, which was a staple of the Mechanicsburg community for over 55 years. He was also a US Postal Service substitute/full-time mail carrier for 29 years plus. Well known in his community and a business sponsor of many community events/teams, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, January 4, 2025, from 5 to 7 p.m., with the  memorial service held on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the A Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Rebecca gatchel officiating. Burial to follow in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery.
