Edward Francis Garvey

September 11, 1934 - July 18, 2025

Edward Francis Garvey of Salem, Virginia, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2025, from cerebrovascular disease at the age of 90. Edward was born in Syracuse, NY, and attended The State University of New York at Oswego.

He was predeceased by his parents, James J. Garvey and Agnes Devin Garvey, and his siblings, James Garvey, Raymond Garvey, Michael Garvey, and Patricia Garvey Duda. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Gladys Wernik Garvey, a dedicated Greenwood Lake, New York Elementary School teacher for over 30 years.

Edward is survived by his wife Myrtle (Jenny) Garvey; two daughters, Deborah Batchelor and husband Michael of Fountain Inn, South Carolina and Karen Ughetta and husband Raoul of Salem, Virginia; two step-sons, Jimmy Rockwell Jr of Clearwater, Florida and Gary Rockwell and wife Kathleen of Traverse City, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews from Syracuse, NY, Atlanta, GA, Boca Raton, Fl and Minneapolis, MN.

He was blessed with four grandchildren, Kevin Batchelor and partner Nacha Belcher of Tulsa, Oklahoma, James Batchelor (deceased), Christopher Moraski and partner Jessica Graves of Alexandria, Virginia, and Ashley Ughetta Russ and husband Erik Russ of Franklinton, North Carolina; and two step-grandchildren, John Rockwell and wife Nicole and Daniel Rockwell and wife Nicole.

Edward was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Moraski, Peyton Moraski, Raelyn Ughetta Russ, Olin Ughetta Russ, Jacob Belcher, Mari Belcher, Aiden Belcher, and Ava Belcher, as well as three step-grandchildren, Frances Rockwell, Ben Rockwell, and Jack Rockwell.

Edward had a long and distinguished career in the insurance industry. He began his career with Zurich Insurance Company in the Claims Department. He held a number of positions of increasing responsibility prior to his retirement from Ohio Casualty Insurance Company as the Claims Manager in their South Jersey office. He also served as the President of the New Jersey Defense Association for several years during his tenure as a Claims Manager.

Edward was an avid golfer throughout his life and enjoyed his volunteer work as a Starter and a Ranger in his retirement years at Heather Glen in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Ashley Plantation in Daleville, Virginia.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on 314 Turner Road, Salem, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association or Gentiva Hospice.
