Elwood Merle Young
Elwood Merle Young, 96, of Lynchburg, VA, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 17, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and servant of Christ, Elwood lived a life marked by honor, faithfulness, and compassion. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Gloria Alice Kane Young, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and ministry.
Born December 3, 1928, in Somesville, Maine, Elwood was the son of the late Lowell Young and Gladys Read Young. On Valentine’s Day 1951, he married his sweetheart, Gloria—a union that would become a lasting example of love and partnership.
Elwood served his country with distinction in the United States Navy, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer after 21 and a half years of honorable service. Much of his career was spent on overseas submarine missions and he commissioned some of the first nuclear submarines, a duty he carried out with dedication and quiet courage. His deep love for his country was evident in everything he did; he was a proud patriot who respected the American flag and the freedoms it represents.
Following his military retirement, Elwood continued his commitment to public service through a second career with the United States Postal Service. In every role, he was known for his integrity, reliability, and humble spirit.
A man of many interests, Elwood was a motorcycle enthusiast who loved riding his Honda Goldwing whenever he could. He was also an avid walker and enjoyed the fellowship of friends during daily walks at the mall.
More than anything, Elwood’s life was defined by his faith in Jesus Christ. He and Gloria shared a heart for ministry, always looking for ways to serve others. Whether through acts of kindness, bringing people to church, or simply being present for those in need, their lives reflected the love of Christ. Many came to know the Lord through their quiet, consistent witness.
Elwood was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, where he was active in The Way Sunday School Class. His church family was dear to him, and his faith remained steadfast to the very end.
Elwood’s love and devotion to Gloria were especially evident as he lovingly cared for her during her journey with Alzheimer’s. His faithfulness during those years was a powerful testimony to his character and the strength of his marriage.
Elwood is survived by his children: Joseph and Beth Young of New Orleans, LA; Robert and Debbie Young of Ellsworth, ME; Mark and Lynn Young of Glenburn, ME; and Paula and Robb Egel of Lynchburg, VA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, twenty two great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren, each of whom carry forward his legacy of love, faith, and service.
Services celebrating Elwood’s life will be held in both Maine and Lynchburg, with details to be announced at a later date.
In honoring Elwood’s memory, we celebrate a life well-lived: faithful to his God, devoted to his family, and committed to serving his country and community.
