Eugene Ray Hackworth

Eugene Ray Hackworth, 91 of Huddleston, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2025 in Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.  He was born September 16, 1934 a son of the late James Hackworth and Ethel Carter Hackworth.  He was also preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Robertson and a brother, Carter Hackworth. 

He was retired as a food inspector with the State of Virginia.  He also worked as a barber in Moneta and Huddleston for many years and sold real estate.  He was a 60 year member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge #244, and enjoyed gardening and was a master gardener.  

He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Phyllis Goode Hackworth; his daughters, Melissa Goad (Keith), Annette Saunders (Ray); his grandsons, Caleb Brown, Connor Goad; his great granddaughter, Emily Brown; a special cousin, Bob Goode and numerous nephews.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1 PM on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford and a funeral will follow at 2 PM in the chapel with Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating.  Interment will follow in the Palestine Baptist Church Cemetery.
