Evelynn Gwathmay Deegan

Evelynn Gwathmay Anderson Deegan, born November 25, 1934, in Whitestone, Queens, New York, died peacefully in her home surrounded by loving friends and family on Thursday, October 26, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband, William John Deegan. Also preceding in death are her parents George Anderson and Lawraign Gwathmay Anderson.

Surviving are her sister Faith Jones and her children, Jennifer, son-in-law Carlos Hart, Jonathan, daughter-in-law Susanne, Glynis and partner Robert, and Gillian. Surviving grandchildren are David Hart and wife, Jessica, Rosemary Hart and husband, Eric Darby, John Hart, Joseph Hart, Amaleigh Deegan, and Eve-lynn Deegan; great-grandchildren are David Hart and Aurelia Hart.

Before her retirement in 1999, she was a teacher at Salem City Public Schools. Her hobbies included reading, cooking, gardening, and sewing.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Planned Parenthood and/or Angels of Assisi’s.
A spring memorial service will be held at her home parish of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salem.
