Famous M. Hairston
On September 18, 2024, the world lost a beloved father, educator, and man of deep faith. Famous McNeal Hairston, Jr. was born on August 12, 1956, to the late Famous M. Hairston, Sr. and Ruby Turner Hairston. In addition to his parents, Famous was preceded in death by his beloved uncles, Moten Turner, Jr. and Early Hairston, Jr. (affectionately known as "Bug"), and his special cousin, Anthony Kwayne Wimbush. Their bond transcended this life, and we trust they are now reunited.
Famous grew up in a home filled with warmth and wisdom, guided by the values instilled in him by his parents. He was a proud graduate of Bassett High School Class of 1974 and went on to earn his degree from Virginia State University in 1978. His path soon led him to Roanoke, Virginia, in 1980, where he devoted over 25 years to shaping young lives as an automotive education teacher in Roanoke City Public Schools, starting his career at Lucy Addison Junior High School, Patrick Henry High School, William Fleming High School, William Ruffner Junior High School and ending his teaching career at James Madison Junior High School. Famous was more than just an instructor—he was a mentor, a role model, and a beacon of hope for his students. He shared his knowledge not only of engines but of life itself, leaving an everlasting imprint on the hearts of those he taught.
A man of unwavering faith, Famous accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at Maple Street Baptist Church in Roanoke. His faith was his anchor, providing him with strength, especially in his later years when he became disabled. Through it all, his spirit remained unshaken, a testament to his deep belief in God’s love and grace.
Famous’ legacy lives on through his children, Beth Edna Hairston (Earl) and Bryson Anwar Hairston, who carry forth his love, wisdom, and strength. His grandchildren, Sanaa Brianna Hodge and Eric Denard Hodge, Jr., brought him immense joy. His family also extends to his special cousins, Marquita Hairston, Ramona Wimbush, Renee Wimbush, Shannon Penn, and Kim Wimbush, who stood by him through life’s highs and lows.
Though Famous is no longer with us in body, his soul remains woven into the fabric of all who knew and loved him. His laughter, his wisdom, and his quiet strength will echo through the lives he touched.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Jeanette Harris, Bobby Manns, Clyde Ross, Ronald Hairston, and Melvin Martin for their love and support to Beth during her caretaking journey.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Noon. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The family will not be receiving friends at the home.
Rest well, Famous McNeal Hairston, Jr. Your work here is done, but your spirit continues to shine brightly. You fought the good fight, and now you are home.
