Fred Roosevelt Toney
Fred Roosevelt Toney, 84, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. He was born on July 17, 1941, in Franklin County, Virginia, to the late Marshall Toney and Mabel Toney Legans. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Herbert Legans; four brothers, George M. Toney, Roy E. Toney, Marshall J. Toney, and Frank E. Toney; and two sisters, Mary E. Belcher and Lassie B. Belcher.
Fred retired from Bassett Furniture after many years of dedicated service as a Machine Operator. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and took great pride in his flowers and vegetables. He was known for his beautifully kept yard and for his creative “heart” design made from leaves.
Fred was a well-groomed man who took pride in his appearance. He loved spending time with his family and friends, always ready with a joke or a comical remark to bring laughter to any room. He often encouraged his loved ones to stay faithful and attend church, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and humor.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Crispter Wells Toney; his son, Frederick Toney; daughters, Connae Tilley (Wesley), Tina Toney, and Jessie Smith (Undreas); stepson, David Taylor; stepdaughters, Linda Eggleston and Tiffiny Patterson; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Maceo Toney and Ronnie Toney; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish his memory.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Carelock officiating. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service. Interment will be private.
