Garry Van Thomas

Garry Van Thomas, 65, of Chatham, VA passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 8, 2023. He was born on September 17, 1958, in Danville, VA to the late Eunice Walker Thomas and the late William Douglas Thomas.

Garry was a member of The Tabernacle in Danville and was a graduate of Averett University. He was a third-generation law enforcement officer. Garry worked for the Danville Police Department from 1980-1985 and then went to work for the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority, retiring in 2015, after thirty years of service. After his retirement, he went to work for the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Department, where he was still employed as an Investigator. Garry was the current President of the Mid Atlantic Chapter of NATIA.

Garry is survived by his daughter, Lauren Thomas Whitt, and her husband Daniel. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Debbie Dale Thomas; brother, William D. Thomas, Jr.; and granddaughter, Hope Whitt.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at The Tabernacle, 1978 South Boston Rd., Danville, VA 24540 with Pastor Joey Bray and Sheriff Michael Taylor officiating. Interment will be at Chatham Burial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at the church and at other times at the residence.
