Gary David McDowell

Gary David McDowell, age 79, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart, VA.

Mr. McDowell was born on October 30, 1946, in Danville, Virginia to the late James Vaden McDowell and the late Ada McDowell Bledsoe. He was married to Phyllis Newsome McDowell, who survives.

Mr. McDowell spent most of his life in the Mountain Hill community where he graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School. Mr. McDowell proudly served as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War as a Staff Sergent in the Engineering Corp. Upon returning, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Averett University. Later in life, he retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber company.

David loved to farm, he was a loving grandfather who adored his grandkids, and he loved animals. He was a member of Williamson Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Mr. McDowell is survived by his daughter, Alesa Eanes (William Ashley) and grandchildren, Alaina Natalia Eanes and Will David Eanes. He is also survived by his special nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Elizabeth Shelton Mills, Virginia French, and Doris Smith; and brothers, Jimmy McDowell, Grady Gibson, Randolph Gibson, Marvin McDowell, and Curtis McDowell.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Danville, Virginia with Pastor Joey Bray officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the McDowell family requests that donations be made to the SPCA of Pittsylvania County.
