George Albert Penney

George Albert Penney, 78, widower of Sherry Ingram Penney, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. In addition to his wife of 51 years he was preceded in death by a son, David Lawson Penney; parents, David A. and Margaret Taylor Penney.

George was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and most recently worked as a dispatch manager for Lawrence Transportation. He served as a baseball and football coach at the North Roanoke Recreation Club for over 20 years. In his spare time he enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, gardening and golf.

He will be missed and remembered by his sons, Zachary Penney and Matthew Penney; daughter, Anne Johns (Michael); grandchildren, Taylor, Ahron, Riley, Natalie; brother, David J. Penney (Karen); sister, Sharon Thomas (Pete).

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2023 in the Chapel of Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Southwest Virginia Ballet, 1005 Industry Avenue SE, Roanoke, VA 24013.
