George C. Barker, Jr., died peacefully at his home in Salem, Va., on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betsy Barker; two sons, David Barker, and Lewis Barker and his wife, Christine; three grandchildren, Jonathan, George Bernard, and Cecile; along with numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, George Charles (Chuck) Barker III.
The son of George C. Barker, Sr. and Nelle Turner Barker, George was born in Welch, W.Va., and raised in Mingo County, W.Va. He attended Matewan High School and earned the rank of Eagle Scout during his years in Boy Scouts, an achievement that reflected the leadership, service, and integrity that marked his life.
He went on to graduate from Roanoke College. While there, he met his wife, Betsy, and they married in 1962. Together they made Salem their lifelong home. In 1989 George founded Barker Realty Co., a business his family proudly continues 36 years later.
For more than 60 years, George was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and helped lead the Roanoke Valley’s first Cub Scout pack. He enjoyed his time at his Craig County home, The Beaver Pond, where he worshiped at Chestnut Grove Church. He cherished the fellowship he found in both Salem and Craig County. George will be remembered and deeply missed by his family and friends.
A private committal service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Ned Morris and the Rev. Dr. Robert T. Copenhaver. A gathering for anyone who knew and loved George to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 2–4 p.m. at Barker Realty Co., 13 East Main Street, Salem, Va.
