George Lee Brown

George Lee Brown, age 80, of Roanoke, VA died on Sunday, May 28, 2023. He was born and raised in St. Helena, California. He joined the US Navy when he was 17 and after that he began to work as a truck driver. During his long career he worked as the transportation manager for Fleming Foods and J.Crew. Later, he returned to truck driving at Hirschfeld. He retired in 2008 and in retirement, he and Julie started a flag car service called J&G Escort. He was a handyman who loved camping, cooking, and spending time with his family and friends. George was a true jokester.
He is predeceased by his mother Nadean Thomas-Henson. He is survived by his wife of thirty-three years Julie Jackson Brown; his children Melinda Simpson, Lora (Barry) Skiles, George Lee Brown, Jr. Phoenix, AZ, Yvonne (Mike) Reinegger Dalzell, South Carolina, Laurel (Bruce) Bryan Roanoke, VA, and Gregory (Christina) Hammond Renton, WA; by his 18 grandchildren Michael Brown, Jeanette Cudworth, Joey Romero, Andrea Brown, Billy Joe Garner, August Grey, Melina Quinn, Savannah Byrd, Logan Brown, Jessica Brown, Caitlin Conroy, Zane Hammond, Brigit Hammond, Grayson Odham, Amanda Hartman, Daniel Bryan, Madeline Bryan, and Tee Bryan his 28 great-grandchildren (with two on the way); his brother Thomas Brown Phoenix, AZ, brother-in-law Jon (Debbie) Jackson (Leawood, KS), sister-in-law Jill (Bruce) Gillett (Centennial, CO).
George’s wonderful days will be remembered with a celebration of life at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the RAM House 824 Campbell Avenue SW, Roanoke, VA 24016 ( www.raminc.org ) or the United Food Bank, 245 S. Nina Dr, Mesa, AZ 85210 ( www.UnitedFoodBank.org ) to help serve veterans programs.
